Edition #61 (Year 2): The Room Isn't the Test. Your Contribution Is.
From the Made for More Memo Archive
This edition was originally shared with subscribers on 25 September 2026 as part of a weekly journey to help ambitious women elevate their life, leadership, business and beyond.
Have you ever walked into a room full of accomplished people and quietly wondered, “Do I really belong here?”
You can have the experience, credentials and track record to justify your seat, yet still feel the pull to prove yourself.
What if the next level isn't about proving you belong? What if it's about recognising what you already bring?
A little context from my week...
Last Friday, I attended the Santander X UK Awards, where I had the pleasure of catching up with familiar faces and meeting new people. Being in a room filled with founders putting their ideas forward reminded me how much our environment can expand our perspective.
Next week, I'll be in Riyadh for the Women Shaping Wealth Summit, where I'll be speaking on “Reputation Capital: What People Say When You’re Not in the Room” and mentoring women attending the Summit.
Two very different experiences, but both have me thinking about the same thing: what happens when you stop focusing on whether you belong in the room and start thinking about what you can contribute to it.
THE MINDSET RESET | Expand The Room In Your Mind.
Sometimes we look at the people around us and quietly wonder:
Am I really at this level?
Do I belong here?
What if they realise I don't know as much as they think I do?The right environment doesn't diminish you. Instead it can expand your perspective. You don't have to become someone else to belong in a bigger room. Just more aware of what is already possible for you.
THE CONFIDENCE CATALYST | Let Yourself Be Seen For What you Know
Visibility can feel surprisingly vulnerable, especially when you've built your reputation carefully and you're used to getting things right.
Visibility isn't simply about being seen. It's about being willing to bring your presence, perspective and experience into the room and let them create value. Your voice doesn't need to be the loudest to matter.
THE STRATEGY SHIFT | Stop Proving. Start Contributing.
Before your next meeting, panel, pitch or important conversation, try replacing:
“How do I prove that I belong here?”
with:
“What can I contribute here?”That question changes your posture.
You move from:
Performing to participating.
Seeking validation to creating value.
Wondering whether you're enough to considering what you can make possible for someone else.
Bonus Insight
The Room Often Reveals The Belief You Brought Into It.
Pay attention to what happens internally when you enter a room where everyone seems accomplished.
Do you become quieter?
Over-prepare?
Start comparing?
Feel the need to prove yourself?
That reaction is useful information.
Don't dismiss it; notice it.
Sometimes the barrier to your next level isn't a lack of capability but the story you've attached to your capability.
That story can be changed.
Mini Coaching Exercise
Think about one room you're preparing to enter, whether that's a boardroom, networking event, leadership conversation or opportunity you've been considering.
Write down:
What am I tempted to prove?
What do I already know, bring or see that could add value?
What would change if I entered focused on contribution rather than approval?
Then choose one thing from your answer to deliberately bring into that room.
You don't need to prove you belong.
Bring what you know, use what you have and let your contribution speak.
